About Great Kei Disability Multipurpose Centre

Who We Are

Great Kei Disability Multipurpose Centre is a community-based non-profit organisation situated in Soto Village, Mooiplaas, in the Eastern Cape.

Established to address the social, economic and developmental challenges experienced by persons with disabilities, the Centre currently supports more than 147 children, young people and adults with disabilities, as well as their families.

Our work responds to persistent challenges such as stigma, neglect, economic exclusion and limited access to essential services in rural communities. Through an integrated community-based approach, we provide practical support that promotes dignity, independence and meaningful participation.

About

Our Story

The Centre was founded through the determination of Amos Mzimeli, who recognised the urgent need for accessible support and development opportunities for persons with disabilities in rural communities.

Following research and engagement across surrounding villages, he encountered people with disabilities experiencing isolation, neglect and inadequate access to education, mobility support and economic opportunities.

This inspired the development of a Centre where persons with disabilities could access practical skills, support services and opportunities to participate more fully in community life. The Great Kei Disability Multipurpose Centre opened in 2014 and has continued to grow its reach and services.

Empowerment

We equip beneficiaries with practical skills, knowledge and support that encourage independence and self-reliance.

Equal Opportunity

We advocate for fair access to education, services, employment and community participation.

Challenges

Responding to Rural Challenges

Persons with disabilities in rural communities often face several connected barriers. These may include inaccessible services, limited transport, unemployment, stigma and insufficient support for their families and caregivers.

The Centre helps bridge these gaps by combining:

This integrated approach enables us to respond to beneficiaries’ practical, emotional and developmental needs.

Working Together for Inclusion

Lasting change requires the involvement of families, communities, government departments, healthcare providers, donors and development partners.

By working together, we can challenge harmful attitudes, improve access to services and create sustainable opportunities for persons with disabilities.
